When we got in the FJ the first thing Etta noticed was the new bag of candy corns I meant to take out of the car last night that was on the dash. I told her we’d have some candy corns after school not before. Changing the subject I said “what day is it?” thinking (hoping) she was going to say “Friday” or “Fun Friday” and instead she with a giggle said “Candy Day?!?” Perhaps you had to be there but it gave me a chuckle.
It’s also ice cream day at school which is always a treat. I told her she didn’t HAVE to get ice cream just because it was ice cream day. I said you could have a cookie instead. and she started explaining why it didn’t work like that and I realized that I can’t understand the first grade cookie/ice cream policy at the school. She added it wasn’t fair that second graders could have cookies and ice cream every day.
When she got out we hugged goodbye and she raced me with her big heavy backpack as she does every day about 20 yards to where the area is where they wait to go inside. We literally race I drive about 5mph & she runs with her giant book bag that contains her lunch and snack and I don’t know what all else. I have to make sure I don’t get too distracted and hit somebody walking across the crosswalk or pulling out from the right or coming up on my left. She stops when she gets to the group & I keep going. We smile and wave goodbye as she walks up to a group of kids from different grades in the lower school. That all takes 5 minutes or less from the leaving the house and then I drive to work.
I like not having to spend as much time in the car every day because we live closer to work, school, the grocery store… but I do miss our morning drives to school last year when we spent about 20 minutes in the car usually talking about stuff like “What did you dream about last night” and would stop by Bojangles and listen to music and sing crazy songs that we’d make up.
Thomas is going to the Railroad museum to take on ride on Thomas the Train. He’s pretty excited. Vero always used to hope he’d never like Thomas because it’s just too silly I guess – a boy named Thomas liking Thomas. He mainly just likes trains but he is a fan of “To To” (as he calls him) for sure and has been for a while.
